Stanza 1
“I wandered lonely as a cloud

Explanation
The poet is sad, and restless because of which he is roaming here and there in the countryside without any purpose like a cloud that keeps floating over the hills and valleys. Here the poet compares himself with the lonely cloud that wanders here and there for no reason.
While roaming like this, he suddenly reaches the shore of a lake. He sees a large number of golden coloured daffodils dancing with the gust of wind. These daffodils were spread in large numbers on the banks of the lake. And they were swinging in the air as if it seemed that they were very happy
Stanza 2
“Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a boy
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.”
Explanation
Here the poet compares the flowers with the stars. Daffodils were shining like the stars as the flowers are compared to the stars. The golden daffodils were shining like the stars and twinkling in the breeze. As per the poet, the daffodils were stretched in a never-ending line and can be visible whenever he wishes to see them along the shoreline. The poet also says that these golden daffodils were moving and dancing in the breeze with happiness.
Stanza 3
“The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company
I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.”
Explanation
Here the poet says that there were many waves in the lake which were dancing but the waves of daffodils from the wind were quite different from that. The waves in the lake could not match it. The joyful dance of the daffodils in the wind was much better than the waves in the lake. This scene was a last source of happiness for him but he could not fully appreciate it as this scene was just a part of it.

In vacant or in pensive mood,

Explanation
The speaker says that he often sits on his couch alone and in an anxious mood, and then all those scenes of daffodils come to his mind. Inside, he remembers all those scenes in his mind. Recalling those scenes, his lonely mind fills with joy. And then his heart dances with joy with daffodils.
